"I am happy I am an Atheist' - Seun Kuti says

An Atheist is someone who does not believe in the existence of a supreme being, (God) or beings (gods). Seun explains why he is happy to be one in a message he posted on Facebook yesterday.

The only region in Africa with a unified doctrine is the traditional African religion and yet it is the evil one. The imported religion do not even accept among themselves what their god says to do or don't do and they r the good guys. I am happy I am an atheist!

Quote of the day; Pope Francis on gay priests

According to the Associated Press, below is what Pope Francis said when quizzed about gay priests during his transatlantic flight home following a week-long trip to Brazil...
"Pope Francis reached out to gays on Monday, saying he wouldn’t judge priests for their sexual orientation.... "If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?" Francis asked.
Below is a longer version (and slightly different translation) of the Pope's quote via NCR:
"When I meet a gay person, I have to distinguish between their being gay and being part of a lobby. If they accept the Lord and have good will, who am I to judge them? They shouldn’t be marginalized. The tendency [to homosexuality] is not the problem...they’re our brothers.”

ASUU DENIESPLAN TO CALL OFF STRIKE THIS WEEK

ACADEMIC Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has described as speculative reports that the strike embarked upon by the union over the inability of the Federal Government to implement the 2009 agreement it willingly entered into with the union would be called off this Thursday.

National President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Fagge, told Vanguard that he was surprised to hear that the union was going to call off the strike on Thursday when the issues tabled before government had not been resolved.

Faggae said: “There is nothing like that (suspending the strike). I am also surprised to hear people say that we are going to call off the strike.

He said: “Our members have made it categorically clear what they want. This meeting we had with government on Friday at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, is just exploratory.

“We are trying to look at issues holistically and see how we are going to address them. So assignments were given to various people that attended the meeting and the expectation is that we will meet tomorrow (today), Monday and look at the assignment given and also look at it on Thursday again.

“So, that is why I’m surprised to hear people say that we are going to suspend strike on Thursday. The mandate of our members is very clear. So, we will wait and see what the Monday and Thursday meetings unfold and then we report back to our members.”

On how long it would take ASUU leaders to convene a meeting with its members after the meeting with government on Thursday, the ASUU boss said “we are in constant consultation with our members, we don’t really have problems with that.

“After the meeting, we will decide when to link up with our members depending upon what is placed on table on Thursday.”

Commenting on the speculation that the union might suspend the strike if the government met up to 50 per cent of the agreement, Faggae said the union would prefer to get to the bridge before crossing it.
He commended the positive disposition of the Joint Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Education towards the resolution of the crisis.

Fagge added: “For us, the interaction we have had with the Joint Committee clearly indicates that they are concerned like other Nigerians”.

“This is expected of the representatives of people. You see the problem has always been that the executive arm of government does not really hearken to advise that are given on how best to address the problems on education in this country.

“We are convinced as a union that the only thing the government can really do for Nigerians is to avail them of education.

“Once you are able to do that, you will see that people will be able to generate jobs and they will be able to take care of themselves and contribute to nation building. So that is the argument we are placing on the table.”

Award-Winning Music Video Director Jailed For 90 Years For Fathering Six Children With His Own Daughters

An award-winning music director found guilty of fathering children with his daughters will spend the rest of his life in jail.

Aswad Ayinde, 55, of Paterson, NJ, was sentenced to 50 years in prison Friday after being found guilty in the second of five expected trials in which he is accused of repeatedly raping his six daughters, resulting in six children being fathered. Mr. Ayinde was found guilty in his latest trial of having intercourse with a daughters when she was as young as eight-years-old. The second sentence adds to the 40 year sentence Mr Ayinde received in a 2011 trial for sexually assaulting a separate daughter.

Mr. Ayinde is known for directing the music video for the Fugees 1996 smash hit ‘Killing Me Softly.’

In a disturbing disclosure during his first trial, Mr. Ayinde’s former wife said he was trying to create a ‘pure family bloodline’ by impregnating his daughters. He even claimed during a pre-trial hearing before the first trial that 'the world was going to end, and it was just going to be him and his offspring and that he was chosen.'

In this latest trial, it was revealed that Mr. Ayinde began having intercourse with his second daughter from the time she eight-years-old, impregnating her four times.

The sexual assaults happened for almost 30 years until Mr. Ayinde and his wife separated, officials said. They occurred in numerous homes across northern New Jersey, even while the family was under watch of state child welfare officials, according to NBC New York. Some of the rapes even took place in an abandoned funeral home.

The family moving as far away as Florida to avoid investigation after case workers removed multiple children from the Ayinde household in 2000, resulting in Mr. Ayinde being arrested for kidnapping for trying to take them from state custody in a medical center, NBC New York reported.

He pleaded guilty to lesser charges and received a year’s probation – as he continued raping one daughter for at least another two years, according to officials.

The depraved father also beat and starved the girls using wooden boards and steel-toed boots for even ‘minor transgressions,’ Ayinde’s wife testified at the first trial.

Some of the children Ayinde fathered with his daughters were born in the home, with at least two babies who died in the home having been buried without notifying authorities or obtaining birth certificates, NBC New York reported.

Mr. Ayinde also fathered 12 additional children with an additional three women, according to court records

Ayinde’s tortured daughters were home schooled and isolated from other children, so as to keep the family secrets hidden, the station added.

With his wife too afraid to confront him, Mr. Ayinde carried out his evil plan without hindrance even while directing the music video for the Fugees 1996 breakout hit ‘Killing Me Softly, for which he won  ‘Best R&B Video' at the 1996 MTV Music Video Awards. The Fugees are also originally from Northern New Jersey.

Mr. Ayinde faces three more trials over the alleged assaults.

VEHICLE PLUNGES INTO RIVER,FAMILY OF FOUR MIRACULOUSLY SURVIVED

A family of four on Thursday narrowly escaped death along the Ijebu Ode-Ore-Benin Expressway when their vehicle plunged into a river in Ososa near Ijebu Ode. The husband, his wife and their two children were however rescued from the river by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, who arrived at the scene shortly after the accident. The FRSC has, however, said accident rate along the Ijebu Ode-Ore-Benin Expressway reduced by over 50 per cent between January and June this year. A witness, who pleaded, anonymity said the car in which the family of four was traveling skidded off the road and ran into the river due to overspeeding. The FRSC Unit Commander in Ijebu-Ode, Mr Isa Seidu confirmed the incident but said no life was lost. Seidu said the timely rescue efforts of the FRSC saved the entire family from perishing. He said, “A black Honda car, with number plate EA 768 LXR in which a family of four were travelling, crashed into the river in the early hours of today (Thursday) due to overspeeding. “While it was raining, the man was on top speed and ran into the river but fortunately no life was lost. The man and his wife and their two children, a male and a female were rescued alive without any injury.” The FRSC unit commander, however, appealed to motorists plying the Sagamu-Ore-Benin express way to always exercise caution on the high way. He added that motorists traveling on the expressway should be cautious around Ososa river, Ogbere and J4 bridge in Ijebu-East Local Government. He said, “I want to passionately appeal to motorist plying Sagamu-Ore-Benin highway to always exercise caution on the highway. “Due to heavy rain at this period, rivers on this highway have risen in volume and there is need for motorists to always apply common sense when approaching these rivers. “The rate of accident along the Ijebu Ode-Ore-Benin Expressway has drastically reduced by over 50 per cent up till the end of June this year when compared with cases of crashes along the route in the last three years. We want it to continue like that. The Unit Commander said a total of 81 crashes occurred between January and June 2011, with 43 people losing their lives. He said 79 crashes occurred in 2012 with 41 people also feared dead. Seidu attributed the over 50 per cent reduction in accident rate to some strategic plans put in place by the unit which, he said, were in line with the Corp Marshal’s directive to reduce accident and fatality rate by 50 per cent across the country.

80 DEAD,31 CRITICAL AFTER A TRAIN CRASHED IN SPAIN

A Spanish train that hurtled off the rails and smashed into a security wall as it rounded a bend was going so fast that carriages tumbled off the tracks like dominos, killing 80 people and maiming dozens more, according to eyewitness accounts and video footage obtained Thursday. An Associated Press analysis of video images suggests the train may have been traveling at twice the speed limit, or more, along that curved stretch of track. The unanswered question is: Why? Spain’s government said two probes have been launched into the train’s derailment Wednesday night on its approach to this Christian festival city in northwest Spain, where planned celebrations in honor of one of Jesus’ disciples gave way to a living nightmare. The regional government in Galicia confirmed that police planned to question the 52-year-old train driver, in Santiago de Compostela’s main hospital with unspecified injuries, as both a witness and as a possible suspect, but cautioned that possible faults in safety equipment were also being investigated. The Interior Ministry raised the death toll to 80 in what was Spain’s deadliest train wreck in four decades. The Galician government said 94 others remained hospitalized in six regional hospitals, 31 of them — including four children — in critical condition. The U.S. State Department said one American was killed in the crash and five others were injured. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said those numbers were “likely to change” and declined to elaborate. “Today the American people grieve with our Spanish friends, who are in our thoughts and prayers,” President Barack Obama said in a statement. In the morning, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, a native of Santiago de Compostela, toured the crash scene alongside rescue workers and went to a nearby hospital to visit those wounded and their families. In the evening Spain’s head of state, King Carlos, and Queen Sofia went to the same hospital, dressed in funereal black. “For a native of Santiago, like me, this is the saddest day,” said Rajoy, who declared Spain would observe a three-day period of mourning. He said judicial authorities and the Public Works Ministry had launched parallel investigations into what caused the crash. Eyewitness accounts backed by security-camera footage of the moment of disaster suggested that the eight-carriage train was going too fast as it tried to turn left underneath a road bridge. The train company Renfe said 218 passengers and five crew members were on board. Spanish officials said the speed limit on that section of track is 80 kilometers (50 miles) per hour. An Associated Press estimate of the train’s speed at the moment of impact using the time stamp of the video and the estimated distance between two pylons gives a range of 144-192 kph (89-119 mph). Another estimate calculated on the basis of the typical distance between railroad ties gives a range of 156-182 kph (96-112 mph). The video footage, which the Spanish railway authority Adif said probably came from one of its cameras, shows the train carriages starting to buckle soon into the turn.
